Earth horizon

12 months is a long time and we have made up a lot of lost ground and yet there is still so much to do. Should we continue? Most definitely. For the sake of our future generations we must persevere. Can we do more? We now have an organisation structure in place and with the expanded network and resources we are enabled to do more if so desired. Can we do better? With more Rotarians committed to the vision and striving to achieve the mission of District PPE we can only improve year on year.

By launching the Green Rotary Club District Award we have further increased the awareness of Rotary’s responsibilities towards the environment and sustainability within the District. This initiative gathered momentum as the PPE Committee talked to the DMC, JPM and individual Clubs. A direct approach proved to be far more effective in teasing out the support for the environment which was always strong but just waiting to be aroused. Twelve Clubs were successful in gaining the Green Rotary Club status in the Rotary Year 2013/14. Some started but failed to satisfy all the criteria within the set deadline line for District Award.

The drive to increase the awareness and getting commitment to support Sustainable Seafood was one of the major initiatives of the PPE Committee where we put in a substantial effort and resource.

There were two key elements to this initiative. The first was to increase the awareness through education and gaining commitment from the public via the Sustainable Seafood Ambassador Programme (SSAP) was the second element.

Educating the current and future generation across a wide spectrum on sustainable seafood was considered an essential and important step to make positive improvement on the sustainability of our seafood. Therefore the committee sponsored the Aberdeen Kai Fong Association’s Inter-school Annual Public Speaking Competition stipulating “Sustainable Seafood” as the main theme for the competition. Thereby increased the awareness of two thousand students participating in the competition from over 120 schools in Hong Kong. In early February conducted training season for 65 volunteer ambassadors for the SSAP at VTC’s HK Design Institute with a large contingent from the VTC Environmental Group. For the Rotarians in the District we also conducted a sustainable seafood education and identification session on the 2nd day of the District Conference in February as part of the Rotary Service Day initiative.

The SSAP was only made possible with team work, creativity, perseverance and forbearance.  For the successful completion of the SSAP we are grateful to the eight final year VTC PRMB students who co-organised the event, the volunteers from the Centennial College Rotaract Club, the St. Peter Secondary School Interact Club and students from Wah Yan College, Mr. Stanley Shea from Bloom to act as our Marine Conservation advisor and trainer and last but not the least WWF (HK) for the 2013 Sustainable Seafood Guide. We must also acknowledge the generosity of the two companies which provided their premises to us free of charge to conduct the SSAP.  They are The Link and Hysan Development. Over the two weekends, 26 & 27 April at Kai Tin Shopping Mall, Lam Tin and 16 & 17 May at Hysan Place, Causeway Bay our well trained volunteers reached out to the public and gained their commitment to support sustainable seafood. We had over 800 individuals signed up to pledge their support.

In order to promote the protection of our natural environment on land, particularly the newly recognised Global Geo-park in Hong Kong we sponsored the Asia Pacific Geo-tourism Asia Pacific Conference 2013 held on 30 November in the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre.

In our own small way your District PPE Committee with your support contributed to preserve the planet Earth. The land, sea & air benefited, little it may be, from our effort but it would be significant if we all do a little to help sustainability.

We must try to work harder with other agencies & the government, engaging more Clubs in the District, instil a responsible behaviour in all Rotarians towards the environment and strive to become a Green Rotary District.

We all benefit from the environment, suffer from its abuse and our actions in our life time have a significant impact on future generations. In the coming years we hope to see more action, more awareness and more education.

Best Improvement Award for 4 students

RAAS will award 4 students nominated by the principals of our RAAS Partnering Schools to be the Best Improvement students of this school year.

The Prize of the Best Improvement Award is a free helicopter ride around Hong Kong Island offered by Ms Lily Fenn, Past President of Rotary Club of Happy Valley. As informed by Ms Fenn, the free helicopter flight is tentatively scheduled in November this year and subject to her discretion as Ms Fenn’s new helicopter will be ready by then.

  1. RAAS Booklet

Rotary Adopt A School Committee is going to work out a booklet for RAAS for the year of 2013-2014 in order to keep all the great work that you have already done so far and share them with others.

It is suggestive of one A4 page for the RAAS materials including text along with 4-5 photos of resolution over 300 dpi each, i.e. one A4 page for every single Rotary Club and also another one A4 page for each school for the text and photos. Kindly limit your materials to Rotary Adopt A School activities organised by RAAS Committee or partnering Rotary Club(s).

Please note that the deadline for sending us the captioned information will be (Friday) 6 June 2014. With your kind co-operations and immediate actions, it is expected that this booklet will be available at the end of June 2014.

In addition, please feel free to let us know the feedback from your club, partnering schools and students in relation to our previous RAAS activities held so that we can improve further and hopefully can provide better services to all of you in the foreseeable future.

A. A meeting in Macao was held by Rotary Adopt A School Committee, Rotary Club of Guia and Rotary Club of Happy Valley jointly with 澳門弱智人士家長協進會 on 6 May 2014

President Patrick Kang, PE Crystal Luk and members of Rotary Club of Guia had kindly arranged and attended the captioned meeting together with RAAS Chair PDG Tony Wong, President Mawin Cheung and PP Wendy Mung in order to discuss the feasibility of collaboration of service projects to serve the mentally challenged among these 4 parties. It was the fruitful result from their site visit to Hong Kong on 22 March 2014 including visited Baptist Convention of Hong Kong Po Tin Kindergarten, Easy Organic Farming, Stewards MKMCF Ma Ko Pan Memorial College and The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong.

One of the main service projects will include organic farming which provide care and concerns to the afore-said needy in Macao, support them by offering vocational training to them so that they can acquire the job opportunities and integrate into the society. In addition, train the teachers and parents of the mentally challenged thus it can enhance better bonding, increase more interactions and improve effective communications among themselves via this Green Project which will be led by President Mawin Cheung and President Patrick Kang. Consequently, it is expected that apart from environmental protection by reducing carbon, the mentally challenged can augment cognition, attain affirmation and have a sense of accomplishment, facilitate their mental health by reducing stress and stabilizing their emotions through this structured organic farming project.

Reflections on RAAS Mock Court 2014: What I learnt and what I enjoyed most

Ho Sze Ngai (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

Earlier this month, we joined the mock court programme and we finished it with the help of two barristers. It was an excellent programme, from which I had a chance to learn from professional lawyers. The debating skills I learnt would help to enhance my communication techniques and be more rational when thinking. Furthermore, the competition has also improved my memory as I had to memorise all the questions our team had asked in court, which was a difficult job. Eventually, I’ve learnt from the speech of the judge too, he told us that we should be more confident when speaking so that we can leave a better impression on others. This programme has taught me so much that I hope more students can take part in and learn from it in the future.

Chan Chi Hoi (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

Mock court is a meaningful activity. I thought the lawsuit was very complicated before I attended this event. After the lawsuit, I still thought it was a difficult task but the process was more straightforward and simpler than I had imagined.
After participating in this activity, I found justice in the legal process and equality before the law. Everyone is treated equally when they are standing in the court.
In the meantime, I got to learn more about the necessary procedures in a lawsuit. I am also more familiar with some of the examination skills. In addition, my presentation skills and problem-solving abilities have been greatly improved.
Mock Court has helped us to understand legal proceedings successfully. I hope that similar events can be organized for students more often.

Lau Kwok Hei (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

I am one of the prosecutors in the Mock Court. In fact, I was not a teammate at the beginning. Then, my teacher said that they needed someone to be the think tank or observers, so the team leader Chan Chi Hoi nominated me to be the think tank. After the first meeting on March 21, we found that one prosecutor was not enough and we needed one more. As a result, I became a prosecutor.
During preparation, I was very nervous as I had to speak in front of the camera. On the other hand, I was worried that the words I said could pose a potential threat to the chance of winning. But after the Mock Court, I found that it was not as difficult as I had thought it was. I also found that I have become more confident in speaking.
Finally, we won the case. I think we need to thank the witness from Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department. He was really logical and the evidence he gave was a great support for our case.

Reflections on RAAS Mock Court 2014: What I learnt and what I enjoyed most

Tang Hiu Ying (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

I joined this activity because I am interested in law. Sometimes when I watch soap operas about lawyers in the court on the TV, I can see that the lawyers could always produce a clever defence for their clients. I think they are really charming.
I am glad to have a chance to join the mock court as I have benefited a great deal from this. Although I was only an observer during this programme, I have learnt the skills of debating. Besides, I realized that the most important thing to make us successful is our confidence. It is really an unforgettable experience and I would join this activity again if I had another chance.

Tang Chung Tak (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

This mock court event has allowed me to learn more about laws, especially through the process of discussing the case with the barristers. Besides, we had the chance to walk out of the classroom and practise the theories in a real court. There, we could get to experience the general routines of lawyers.
Towards the end of the competition, the judge told us the importance of eloquence. I hope that I can be one of the eloquent achievers he expected in teenagers. Finally, I have to thank lawyers and teachers who had given me this precious chance. Thank you!

Pun Hau Yi (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

Having joined the Mock Court, I’ve learnt more legal knowledge. I really enjoyed this activity. Before the trial, we had met our two legal advisors. They were patient and taught us how to litigate. Also, they shared with us some previous cases and techniques used in analysing the case. All these have widened my horizons. It was my honour to join this meaningful activity. Also, the competition was exciting and I am glad that I could visit the High Court. I hope I can join another activity like this in the future.

Kwok Tsz Fun (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

After the Mock Court, I’ve learnt a lot of things about laws that I didn’t know before. I thought that the trial procedures in court would be the same as what the television dramas showed, but it turned out that the dramas could sometimes be misleading. I have to say thank you to the two lawyers who taught us the skills of debating. It was our honor to have them as our team’s consultants. Although I was just a spectator, I did enjoy engaging in the contest and feel excited about the eloquence from both our team and the other team. It would be one of my most unforgettable events in my secondary school life.

Tang Wan Yuet (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

It’s my first time joining the Mock Court Programme. Actually, before joining this programme, I didn’t know much about the law. I had learnt a lot although I was only an observer who sat in and appreciated our classmates’ performance. During the mock trial, I have found that intelligence is really important for potential lawyers. I have also learnt that as a defense or prosecuting lawyer, examination of evidence needs to be precise, otherwise the judge and witnesses might be confused. Performance of our classmates was good. They were much more sensible than I thought before and I fully enjoyed listening to their presentations on the cases. The Mock Court Programme is really meaningful and I wish I could join this kind of activity again if I had another chance. Finally, we sincerely thank the two lawyers who hosted the workshops in our school. They were really kind and taught us a lot.

Reflections on RAAS Mock Court 2014: What I learnt and what I enjoyed most
Ng Tsz Wing (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

After I joined the Mock Court Programme, I have learnt the skill of persuasion. Although I was just an observer, I have learnt a lot through observing the simulating lawsuit. For instance, I have learnt the importance of confidence. Being confident is the first step to persuade others. It’s only when I believe in myself that others will put their trust in me.
Moreover, the pace of speaking is crucial. ‘Not too fast, not too slow’, as what the judge said. If I speak too fast, people may miss what I have said and may not have enough time to think about it. If I speak too slowly, people may forget what I have said before. A moderate speed would be favourable when speaking.

Huang Ching Ping (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

It was my great honor to join the mock court activity. After visiting the court, I have learned more about the legal practice, for example, I got to learn more about how criminal and civil cases are handled in Hong Kong and how the magistrates or judges decide whether someone is guilty. Also, I noticed that the magistrates or lawyers need to be experts in the field and have excellent communication and organization skills. Therefore, being a judge, a magistrate, a barrister or a lawyer is not an easy task.
Court is the place where we find justice and wisdom. I surely love this place and I hope I can be a legal expert working there one day. “Every great dream begins with a dreamer.” I am a dreamer who will devote my heart and soul to become what I want to be.

Lo Chor Kwan (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

Joining the Mock Court programme has given me a great and memorable experience. As a legal team member, I played the role of witness. Through the help from the lawyers and cooperation among team members, I’ve learnt a lot more about languages and rules of the court. For example, I have learnt that people need to bow once they enter the court. I have also learnt how to file a lawsuit and some miscellaneous things, like the seating arrangement in the High Court.
Meanwhile, I am glad that our team won the lawsuit. That’s the best return for our team’s hard work. All in all, I enjoyed the Mock Court programme because it has definitely broadened my horizons and extended my reach to a different field.

Yau Man Ho (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)

Last Saturday, we went to the High Court to join the Mock Court programme. During the programme, we engaged in a lawsuit concerning the Protection of Consumers’ Right and the Dutiable Commodities. Before we attended the competition, our school had invited two barristers to help. During the workshop, I found that a lawyer’s work could be so busy on weekdays. When I heard that I could be one of the mooters for a case, I felt very surprised and I enjoyed the programme very much. In the first case, I was on the defendant’s side. My job required me to think hard on how I can better protect the defendant’s interests.
After the judge delivered his judgment at the end of the trial, I found myself to be more confident and that possessing good communication skills could be the best weapon to compete with others in such a competitive society.

Mock Court is an unforgettable activity. This was a valuable day in my secondary school life as it was my first time going to the High Court. Without the Mock Trial, I couldn’t think of another reason to enter the place. During the competition, I was assigned to make final submissions. I feel regretful that my speech was not smooth enough. If I could have one more chance to do it again, I would do it much better. This activity lets me know more about the court and trials. I must address my hearty thanks to the Rotarians who provided an arena for secondary students to learn. Thank you!

Reflections on RAAS Mock Court 2014: What I learnt and what I enjoyed most

Choi Kit Yee (Chiu Lut Sau Memorial Secondary School)
I have learnt many things and had a lot of fun from the mock court. I learned how to work with others as we tried to find out how we could win in these two cases. Moreover, my logical thinking skills were enhanced. It is a very useful thing in our daily lives. I am glad that I had the chance to join the mock court and visit the Customs Headquarters Building. I think it was a very meaningful activity for me.

It was my great honor to be our school’s representative to attend the Mock Court as a court clerk. Although my task was rather easy, unlike the other lawyers, I still learnt a lot after this activity.

Throughout the day, I had learnt that self-confidence is the key to success. If we are confident enough to face the audience and keep trying, we may not be the best but at least we’ll have no regrets. It was really a brand-new experience for me. I enjoyed the
part when the prosecutors and defence lawyers persuaded the judge to accept their
arguments in court. Everyone was enthusiastic during the session. All these were impressive to me.

From this mock court, I have really learned a lot about the law. I also got to understand that law is such an interesting subject.
In the pre-trial stage, my classmates and I did not understand the procedures in court. Through two professional workshops, I started to have a better understanding about how to sue the defendant in various courts of knowledge. Approaching the competition day, we did a rehearsal and the court process was more complicated than I had imagined. Fortunately, our teachers put effort to help us, so that we began to recognise what was going on in the real court.
On the day of stepping into the court, I was very surprised that we succeeded, and beat the opponent. We learned that although a case may seem hard to solve, we can try our best to confront the difficulties and achieve our goal in the end.

From the case, I have gained a lot of experience on handling law cases. I think I would never get to learn anything about law if I had missed this opportunity.
This time, my role was the lawyer for the Defendant. The mission was really challenging for me. I needed to defend for my client in the High Court. It was such a great burden on me by that time as I was standing in the limelight of the court. Not everyone can have a chance to visit the high court, but I got to have the chance of speaking my mind in here. Therefore, I was excited about it.
Finally, our team got quite a decent result. I think the credits should be given to my teachers and legal advisors. They gave a lot of support to us. The suggestions they gave were really useful to the cases. If I could join similar events again, I think I could improve myself even further.
